Underfloor Heating
When the Underfloor Heating System is running, hot water passes through the pipes transferring heat as efficiently as possible into the floor, effectively turning the entire floor surface into a large low temperature radiator. The heat radiates upwards from the entire floor surface, delivering an evenly heated room. The floor then becomes your thermal mass for the building and not your walls which is why the depth of the concrete is important too.
Underfloor heating offers some significant advantages over conventional radiator heating systems - more unobstructed usable wall space, reduced heating costs and compatibility with renewable energy, to name just a few. Another significant advantage is the property is maintained at a comfortable temperature throughout the day and night, unlike radiators which are only running at certain times of the day.
By building warm water pipes into the construction of your floors, the heat from them is transferred efficiently and evenly to the entire floor surface. This converts your floor into a large low temperature radiator that keeps you warm and cosy wherever you are in the room. Combined with individual room thermostats, you can keep the temperatures in your home just how you like it.
New build or renovation?
In a new building, incorporating underfloor heating is very straightforward. The pipes are installed into the floors during construction, and a system can be designed for every type of floor.
For renovation, the main consideration is floor height. If solid floors are being removed, again the heating pipes can be incorporated into the floor construction. Suspended floors present no problems as the heating pipes are fitted between the floor joists.
